3 Alternatives to Rugs

Adding a rug to a room can be a fantastic way of adding colour and style, and works for a number of practical reasons too, such as warmth, hiding an unsightly floor, or creating a less slippery surface. But boy…rugs are expensive, aren’t they? If a brand new rug isn’t in your budget right now, it doesn’t mean you have to go without. It’s possible to create your own without breaking the bank. Here are three ways to do just that:
1. Carpet offcuts
Whilst a carpet offcut isn’t going to be available to everyone, if you do have some leftover carpet, it could be worth making use of it. It can easily be cut to size (be careful and remember to measure!) and the edges make look great as they are, depending on the type of carpet you’re using. If not, you can send the offcut off to have edging added.
2. Throws & Blankets
Now bear with us…we’re not suggesting you use the fleece throw from the back of your sofa to line the floor with! But there are some seriously heavy duty throws around that, depending on the size you need, and the surface of your existing floor, can work well as a rug. Remember to line with a grip underlay, especially if you’re using it on top of hard flooring, and expect to search a little harder than usual to find the piece you want.
3. Knitted pieces
If you’re an avid knitter (or even if you’re not!), you might want to consider making your own rug using your talents! Using thick Merino wool to create blankets and rugs is bang on trend right now and you can either use giant needles or your hands to get the job done. The end result is fabulous and you’ll be able to smile with pride whenever you walk over your masterpiece!
