4 Ways to Reuse an Old Crate

Click onto any design website or open any interior decorating magazine and you’ll see projects that involve old crates. The really amazing thing about them is that you can pick a couple up out of the change in your back pocket, and then do just about anything with them. To get some fresh inspiration take a look at four of our favorite ways you can incorporate them into your decor.
1. Picture rail
The old fashioned picture rails around the top of the living room walls aren’t seen much anymore, but that doesn’t mean the idea has died out completely. We love the idea of mounting a crate on the living room wall to create a feature wall that you can use to display a whole host of photos and pictures. Don’t worry about having plenty of room; make your arrangement eclectic with plenty of overlap to create a unique visual that you’ll wonder how you ever did without.
2. Firewood
When you have a fire in the living room you really want to make it the focal point of the entire space. With a metal bucket full of twigs and kindling on one side, and a wooden crate piled high with logs on the other you can create a nice country touch with next to no effort. Keep your wood there all year round and you’ll have something that looks so much better than a plastic crate or cardboard box!
3. Letter and keys
The hallway can be a hard space to get right because the dimensions put some pretty tight limits on what you can have in there. We love the idea of wall mounting a small shallow crate just inside the front door and using it as the family organiser. You can have somewhere to put the morning’s post, and half a dozen or so black metal hooks mounted inside it to hang all of your keys.
4. A base for a mirror
Something we really like the look of is using a large square crate as the base for a long body length mirror. Resting your mirror on top of a crate and then propping it against a wall is a great way to make a feature that sits calmly in the corner of your bedroom or bathroom. You can even add a couple of ornaments like a wine bottle candle holder or a jar of fairy lights to the top of the crate to give it that homely look.
