4 Ways to Use Washi Tape in Your Home

Tips

Posted 12/06/2018

Washi tape is both cheap and versatile – not to mention pretty – so it’s no wonder it’s such popular stuff. Of Japanese origin, washi tape is essentially sticky paper tape, although the term is often used to include normal coloured or patterned sticky tape too. It has all kinds of purposes, including the usual sticky tape ones, and at only a couple of pounds per roll, you can get yourself plenty of different designs. Here are a few ways you can make use of washi tape in your home:

1. Covering old picture frames

Most of us are in possession of one or two photo frames that we don’t really like or no longer fit our décor style. But it seems a shame to throw them away when we could so easily give them a makeover, doesn’t it? Use washi tape to give a frame a new lease of life. Depending on the shape and size of your frame, you might be able to stretch the tape lengthwise, or it might be best to use short strips instead. Either way, you can have a frame patterned in florals, stripes, or whatever you like in just minutes!

2. Creating new frames on the wall

If you love hanging pictures or photos on the wall, but don’t have many frames, using washi tape to create a frame on the wall itself can be a good solution. Simply tape the shape of your picture on the wall, using the tape to keep the image in place. Of course, if you live in a rental property, you might want to skip this one. Washi tape usually leaves no marks but there are no guarantees!

3. Wrapping gifts

One very simple use for washi tape is to use it place of sticky tape for wrapping gifts! You can buy colours to match your wrapping paper or, if you’re a fan of using traditional brown paper for your gift-wrapping, go for some bright bold patterns to liven it up a little. You could do the same for sealing envelopes for birthday and Christmas cards too!

4. Create a washi tape wall

Now, this one is only for those with a very steady hand and a good eye for symmetry – and who don’t mind using rather a lot of washi tape! Create a feature wall using stripes of differently coloured or patterned washi tape. This isn’t something to do all over a room as it would be quite overpowering, but on a small wall to create a focal point, it’s perfect! Again, if you live in a rental property, proceed with caution...
