Tips

Posted 08/11/2023

The most wonderful time of the year is approaching and In the words of Mariah Carey 'it's tiiiiime' to start thinking about how you're going to bring all the festive vibes into your home this year. We've rounded up a list of four of the biggest interior trends when it comes to Christmas decorating this year, from minimalism to maximalism, classic to contemporary, this is your ultimate guide to decorating in style for Christmas 2023.

Minimalistic Magic

If you're the proud owner of white wooden Venetian blinds or shutters, or maybe some Roman blinds in a cosy natural texture -  we think you'll like this one. Minimalism meets neutrals meets Scandi, this Christmas look embodies the 'less is more' approach to interior decor. With stripped-back accessories and intentional touches for a soft but Christmassy feel that doesn't make your space feel like Santa's grotto!

  • This colour palette is all about neutrals, but it isn't one-dimensional. Make sure you layer soft whites, beiges and creams with a touch of contrasting sage green for a truly pared-back and cohesive Christmas scene,
  • Real trees are preferred for that authentic Scandi feel, adorned with modest paper, glass, and ceramic baubles. Tinsel and garlands can stay in the loft if you're going for this look as you can simply wrap your tree in warm white fairy lights to give a subtle glow. No tree-topper is necessary here but if you'd like to top off your Pinterest-perfect pine, opt for a contemporary star or simple bow.
  • Dress your dining table with a runner in a natural texture, and accessorise with simple pillar candles and sleek vases with single stems of eucalyptus.
  • Add chunky-knit Christmas stockings to your mantel, and thick woollen blankets to to complete the cosy, clean vibe.
  • Opt for simple but sweet home fragrances like French vanilla, or sugar cookie to complete the cosy Christmas ambiance!

Our Interior Designer, Amy Wilson advises "Whilst less is definitely more with this Christmas scheme, don't forget texture and layers to prevent everything looking too cold. Sheepskin, knit, boucle, and wool can all work well together when in neutral tones."

Classic Christmas

If you're a traditionalist when it comes to your window coverings, choosing wooden, simple Venetian blinds, plain curtains, or classic rollers, we think this could be the Christmas trend for you. Utterly recognisable and nostalgic, this traditional Christmas look is timeless and undeniably festive. If your ideal Christmas home is straight out of a Christmas movie like Elf or Home Alone then try these ideas...

  • A classic Christmas colour palette of red, silver, gold, and green is essential to create this look.
  • Adorn your tree with beaded garlands and tinsel galore! Opt for warm white lights for a traditional look, or multicoloured fairy lights for that nostalgic feel. No empty branches allowed here; from classic baubles to festive figurines don't be sky with the ornaments and decorate til your heart's content! Finish with a velvet tree skirt and shiny star topper to create a tree that rivals the Rockerfeller! It is the perfect scheme for incorporating old family decorations or home-made pieces from your kids.
  • Give your mantelpiece a glow-up with a traditional Christmas garland adorned with red berries and pinecones, and don't forget to hand those classic Christmas stockings up for Santa!
  • The tree isn't the only star of the show with this look, create a cosy tablescape with red or white tablecloths, garlands, gold-rimmed glassware, and candle sticks.
  • Keep to the classic Christmas scent library when it comes to home fragrances, fill your home with the aroma of spiced apple, or freshly baked gingerbread.

Amy says "It is hard to beat traditional when it comes to Christmas, and this style can be added to a few baubles at a time, making it a scheme that lasts. Head out for a walk and gather holly and ivy to bring this scheme to life."

Winter Wonderland

If your home is a tribute to all things white and sparkly, or if you have a grey or monochrome colour scheme, this could be perfect for you!

  • Silver and white take centre stage, paired with fluffy textures and warm white mood lighting for a cosy contrast.
  • Opt for a snow-covered tree decorated with white frosted baubles, glass ornaments, and silver touches. Finish off with a white fluffy tree skirt to mimic the appearance of freshly fallen snow.
  • Decorate throughout your space with snowflake motifs and silver and white accessories. Revamp any out-of-favour accessories with a can of silver spray paint or white glitter.
  • Decorate your table with silver napkin rings, a snow-frosted garland featuring silver pinecones, and white candle sticks for a warm glow.
  • Add faux sheepskin blankets and snuggly rugs and cushions to bring some cosiness to your winter wonderland.
  • Use cool Christmas scents like peppermint and pine to completely set the scene!

Bejewelled

This is the choice for the drama queens and maximalists amongst you! If a statement window dressing or velvet curtain is your bag, then jewel tones will complement perfectly!

  • Classic jewel tones like burgundy, sapphire, and emerald green form the basis of this  colour palette and will instantly transport you into an opulent Christmas!
  • When it comes to the tree, ditch the tinsel and opt for beaded garlands for an opulent finish. Adorn with baubles from the jewel-tone colour palette, and maybe old pieces of jewellery to add extra drama and sparkle.
  • Decorate the rest of your home with gold and brass metallic touches or opt for soft furnishings in velvet and velour textures for a luxurious feel.
  • Don't stop the extravagance when it comes to table setting, gold candelabras, brass cutlery, and jewel-toned glassware would all work a treat to make your table just as interesting as the tree!
  • Opt for rich Christmas scents like mulled wine and hot cocoa as the finishing touch for this magical maximalist interior moment.

Amy says "Look around your home, scour the charity shops, and pick out old junk jewellery, and coloured crystal glassware to add to this scheme. It is opulent, decadent, and yet budget-friendly - the perfect combo."
