With the clocks changing, it's clear to see the shift to winter has well and truly begun. The nights are becoming darker and colder, and it's time to enjoy being at home without getting FOMO (fear of missing out). We've got you covered with some sacred tips for how to hunker down and cosy up your home for the winter. Go on, grab a brew and let's get cosy...

Candles

I don't know about you, but the thought of having the 'big light' on during the winter sounds obscene to me, and costs a bomb on those always growing energy bills. Lighting candles gives you three benefits the one simply can not ignore.

1, Warmth – Did you know that candles produce a twentieth of the heat of a space heater? So for a cost and a planet saving option enjoy candles in all different forms – dinner candles, tea lights and chunky pillar candles can all be combined to add a touch of extra warmth to your home. Top Tip- cluster chunky church candles at different heights onto a tray in the centre of your coffee table.

2, Ambiance – There is no doubting the ambience created by lighting candles, creating a cosy and relaxing space that feels softer, more atmospheric and cosy.
Fun Fact - Did you know that it has been scientifically proven that candles help us wind down and relax?

3, Lighting - the gentle flicker of candlelight can help illuminate dark and cold corners of your home. More candles could mean less electric light and therefore a saving on those energy bills- WIN WIN! Top Tip – try scented candles like pine and eucalyptus to create the ultimate Christmas vibe.

Create a cosy nook

This is a lovely home project to do for winter. A cosy space for you to unwind is key to enjoying your home to its full potential. Add thick chunky, warm blankets, a comfy chair and a cushion to create the cosy little nook. A side table and lamp provide you with a calming space to switch off from the outside world. Be sure to close your curtains and blinds to keep the cold and dark well and truly outside.

Warm Colour palette

Using warm tones like Terracotta or Mustard Yellows, when choosing your decor style is key to keeping your rooms warm and welcoming. Adding pops of colours with accessories will help make your space feel inviting while adding key points of interest that will make your space a perfect sanctuary.

Textures

From throws to cushions, rugs to curtains, adding and layering different textures will warm up your space to lock in warmth and comfort. Add thick chunky throws to the back of your sofa for a serious autumnal trend, this will double up as a blanket to keep you warm while you're watching your fav Netflix series in the evening.

Double Up

If you already have blinds or curtains hung then why not consider the favourite trick of stylists and designers by layering up your window with both? Adding in a second layer at your window will add extra style and interest, as well as having the added advantage of utilising the benefits of thermal lining. A roman blind outside your window will give you maximum coverage and insulation and also creates the illusion of a larger window too. If you have some blinds already hung, try a contrast pair of curtains maybe with bold statement design and go for full length to the floor for maximum heat retention and to draught-proof your home.

Furniture Placement

If you want to go that extra mile, try rearranging your furniture to make the most of your space. Moving your furniture to warmer areas of the home like around the fireplace will help keep your home cosy.
