The upstairs landing can often be a tricky space to decorate, partly due to the ‘passing through’ nature of the area and partly due to it sometimes being a bit of an afterthought. But your upstairs hallway can be designed to create just as huge an impression as any other room, with just a few simple ideas!
1. Include storage
There aren’t many of us who would turn down some extra storage space, so what if you could make that a design feature of your landing? If you have the space, consider creating a built-in shelving unit for fantastic visual impact. Or, even simpler, include an ottoman for spare blankets or sheets, and add ornaments or cushions for extra cosiness.
2. Create a seating space
Everybody loves a little reading nook and, space allowing, there’s no reason why yours can’t be on your landing. Perhaps you could add a lounge chair or a wooden bench, load it up with cushions, and have a lamp nearby. As well as being ultra comfy, this will look striking too.
3. Get the lighting right
Overhead lights are an instant atmosphere killer, and if you have softer lamp lighting throughout the rest of the house, why change that in the hallway? Try to include a table lamp or floorlamp somewhere on the landing, or opt for soft wall lights instead of ceiling lights.
4. Add some colour
Even to the biggest colour lovers, it can be tempting to keep the hallway and landing neutral and unassuming. But why? It’s perfectly possible to add colour without drowning the space. Add a boldly coloured blind to the window or paint the walls a muted pastel, rather than another shade of beige. It’ll make passing through the space so much more interesting!
