1. Slate tile boards
Using an old slate tile is a great way of creating a small kitchen notice board or shopping list. Mount it in a simple wooden frame or cut a groove into a thick slab of wood. With a chalk pen to hand you’ll be able to update your to-do list and add messages and artistic masterpieces.
2. Hallway benches
A bench is a great way to decorate your hallway when space is at a premium. You can easily up-cycle an old school or church bench with a touch of wax or paint. Add it to your hallway and you’ll be able to add that welcoming visual you see the moment you step inside the door.
3. Wicker benches
The great thing about these is that you can use them just about anywhere. As a magazine rack down the side of the sofa, a more homely way to store toilet rolls than the plastic packet, or a timely replacement for your old wastepaper bin. Get creative and you’ll be amazed at how well they add to any room.
4. Candle lanterns
We love the idea of thick chunky candles that are half melted inside metal or wooden lanterns. Don’t feel that you have to hang them on the walls; they look amazing when they’re on a side table in the kitchen or living room. That way you can see the gentle flicker out of the corner of your eye when you’re relaxing in the evening.
5. Hessian canvases
Hessian is one of the materials of choice if you’re trying to create a rustic theme throughout your home. A small A4 canvas hung with some twine is a great way of adding a rustic touch as you walk up the stairs or into the hallway. Make a couple of paper stencils and invest in a paint pen and you’ll be able to adorn your canvas with something far better than you’ll be able to find in the shops.
